How much does it cost to open a gym in India?

Pick your city, floor size and equipment grade. The calculator returns a setup estimate, your monthly running cost and the number of members you need to break even. No sign-up, nothing leaves your browser.

Where is the gym?
Equipment grade
ONE-TIME SETUP₹26 lakh to ₹35 lakh
MONTHLY RUNNING COST₹1.7 lakh
BREAK-EVEN MEMBERS114
  • Equipment₹15 lakh
  • Interiors and flooring₹11 lakh
  • Rent deposit (2 months)₹1.5 lakh
  • Licences and registration₹45,000
  • Buffer for surprises (10%)₹2.7 lakh

Monthly cost assumes 2 trainers, front desk and housekeeping staff at typical tier 2 city salaries, plus rent, electricity and maintenance. Keep a separate working capital reserve of about ₹8.6 lakh (five months of running costs) while membership builds. Estimates come from published 2025-26 market ranges and vary by locality; treat them as a planning baseline, not a quotation.

How to read these numbers

The setup range covers equipment, interiors, deposit, licences and a 10 percent buffer. The monthly figure is the bill that arrives whether members do or not, which makes it the more important number: most gyms that close in year one were killed by the monthly costs, not the setup bill.

For the full reasoning behind every line, including where first-time owners overspend and the two costs almost everyone underestimates, read the companion guide: How much does it cost to open a gym in India?

How accurate is this gym cost calculator?

It is a planning estimate built from published 2025-26 Indian market ranges for rent, equipment, interiors, salaries and licences. Real quotes vary by locality and negotiation, so results are shown as a range rather than a single number. Use it to size your budget, then confirm with local quotations.

What does the setup estimate include?

Equipment, interiors and flooring, the rent security deposit, first-year licences and registration, and a 10 percent buffer for surprises. It does not include franchise fees, land purchase or the working capital reserve, which is shown separately.

Why do I need a working capital reserve on top of the setup cost?

Rent and salaries continue every month while membership builds, and most new gyms take six to twelve months to reach break-even. A reserve of four to six months of running costs is the difference between surviving that ramp and running out of cash in month eight.

How is the break-even member count calculated?

Monthly running cost divided by the monthly fee you plan to charge, rounded up. It is the number of paying members needed to cover costs before any profit. Unrecorded dues and missed renewals raise it in practice, which is why clean payment records matter from day one.
